SPELD South Australia

SPELD Phonic Books support the teaching of reading by using a structured synthetic phonics approach (Sounds-Write and Jolly Phonics series). They are designed to build on the pre-reading skills of oral language and phonological awareness needed for reading success.
The SPELD SA Phonic Book Series complements the teaching of reading and writing using a structured synthetic phonics approach. SPELD SA aims to help Aboriginal students engage with phonic books by having characters, content and settings that reflect Aboriginal communities. In developing this series, SPELD SA has consulted with people who live and work in the Anangu, Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands.
In the creation of Kora the Dog and the Kangaroo Tail, a visually strong and uncluttered graphic approach was taken to complement the direct storytelling of the book. A bold, minimalistic colour palette was chosen with some hero bright colours for interest, to help support the narrative flow and consistency.

Epicurean Delicatessan
alfresco artwork

The Epicurean Delicatessen, Bendigo Victoria, a family owned business, prided themselves on providing exquisite Italian cuisine and fresh delicatessen goods to the Bendigo community for over 31 years.
We devised a list of Mediterranean ingredients that feature prominently in their cooking to be depicted in a series of illustration pieces that would form a mural for their outside courtyard.
The monochromatic colour scheme was chosen to ensure the space would still maintain its relaxed atmosphere, with the artworks acting as a supportive element to their surrounds, which boast a traditional palette of beige and terracotta walls.
I decided that the linework should therefore carry the illustration style to create exciting and unique depictions of the interesting forms of the subject matter – adding movement, versatility and character to the space, whilst not shouting
at patrons.

“I worked with Alice several years ago. To develop a logo/trademark for my business. The process was very collaborative and the final design was very distinctive and a bit quirky – still love it.”
